Guwahati: A police personnel on Sunday allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in Assam's Bongaigaon district.

As per reports, the police personnel was identified as Chittaranjan Choudhary, a resident of Bongaigaon district posted with the 8th Assam Armed Police Force.

Upon receiving the information of the same, a police team rushed to the spot and shifted the body to the Bongaigaon Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

Reports also claimed that he was suffering from an illness for a very long time. However, it is yet to be ascertained the motive behind such an extreme step.

On August 21, in a similar incident, a home guard posted at the Morigaon police station allegedly shot himself in the head with a pistol near the Superintendent of Police (SP), Morigaon.

The Home Guard was identified as Rantu Medhi and was a resident of the Kahibari area in the Morigaon district.

He was struggling with some personal issues following which he took this drastic step. However, the exact reason behind this step was not known immediately.

Prior to this incident, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (Traffic) Dinakanta Sonowal (50), a resident of the Tinsukia by-pass allegedly committed suicide after he shot himself from his service revolver at the traffic room within the Tinsukia Sadar Police Station at around 3.30 pm.

Though he was immediately shifted to the Tinsukia Civil Hospital in critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

As many as 35 personnel of various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Assam Rifles, and the National Security Guard (NSG) committed suicide in Assam during the five-year period between 2017 and 2021.

This is the highest number of suicides in the Northeast by Central armed personnel during the five-year period. Tripura is second with 27 suicides. On the other hand, Meghalaya registered nine suicides, Manipur eight, Mizoram five, and Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland each registered two suicides.

Of the suicides registered in Assam, eight occurred in 2017, four in 2018, five in 2019, 11 in 2020, and seven in 2021.
